Lunaria is a biennial herbaceous plant, known by several common names including coins or glasses of the Pope.
The plant has various medicinal properties. Lunaria seeds are used to make a spicy mustard-like sauce, while leaves and roots can be cooked boiled or eaten in salads.
It prefers shaded exposures. The violet flowering is followed by very ornamental, silvery seed capsules, called "pope's coins".
