Perennial species indigenous to Europe, Western Asia and North Africa, Althaea officinalis's leaves, flowers and roots have been used in traditional herbal medicine.

The flowers and young leaves can be eaten, and are often added to salads or are boiled and fried.

The stems, which die down in the autumn, typically grow 1 meter, but can reach around 2.
